Chronology
Predecessor BMW N46/N45
Successor BMW N13

The BMW N43 is a straight-4 naturally aspirated DOHC engine which was sold from 2006-2013. It replaced the N46 (and related N45),[1] however the N43 was not sold in countries with high sulfur fuel,[2] therefore the N45/N46 engines remained in production alongside the N43.

Compared with its N46 predecessor, the N43 features direct injection.[3]

In 2011, as part of BMW's shift to turbocharging, the N43 was replaced by the turbocharged N13.

N43B16

The N43B16 has a 1,599 cc (98 cu in) displacement and produces 90 kW (121 hp) and 160 N⋅m (118 lb⋅ft).[3] It is the successor to the N45 engine and, as per the N45, does not have valvetronic.[4]

Applications:

  • 2007-2009 E87 116i
  • 2008 E90 316i

N43B20

The N43B20 has a 1995 cc displacement and produces up to 127 kW (173 PS; 170 hp) and 210 Nm.[3][4]

In 2009, the 2.0 litre N43B20 replaced the 1.6 litre N43B16 in the 116i. Power remained at 90 kW (121 hp), however torque was increased. The N43 in all its forms is a non Valvetronic engine and has a number of problems in service - these include oil leaks, timing chain and tensioner breakage, coil pack and injector troubles as well as crankshaft bearing trouble often thought to be due to the electronic oil pressure solenoid failing.

Applications:

90 kW (121 hp) and 185 N⋅m (136 lb⋅ft) version

110 kW (148 hp) and 190 N⋅m (140 lb⋅ft) version

127 kW (170 hp) and 210 N⋅m (155 lb⋅ft) version
