Andre Beteille

Andre Beteille, FBA (born 30 September 1934) is an Indian sociologist and writer. He is particularly well known for his studies of the caste system in South India. He is a Professor of Sociology at the Delhi School of Economics at the University of Delhi where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology since 2003.[1] He was appointed National Research Professor by the Government of India in 2007.[2] He is a recipient of the Indian civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan.[3]

Presently he is the Chancellor of North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Meghalaya [4] and Ashoka University, in India.[5]
