The All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) is the governing body of football in Nepal. It is responsible for the national team as well as club competitions. The organisation was founded in 1951 as the All Nepal Football Association and became affiliated with FIFA in 1972. The current President of ANFA is newly elected Karma Tsering Sherpa.Its current headquarters is located in the ANFA House in ANFA Complex, Satdobato.

History

Pre-ANFA (1921–1950)

The entry and initial start-up of football came in Nepal during Rana regime in 1921. The game was introduced in Nepal by the young players who had learnt this game from other countries. This game was watched by a huge mass of audience and became very famous at that time. However, it is believed that the pioneer of this game in Nepal was Narayan Narshingh Rana of Thamel and Chandrajung Thapa of Naxal. There were some places, which were used as football ground for palace teams, such as sujan khanal, Mrigendra Shamsher Niwas babarmahal, Mahabir Niwas Tangal palace, Nar shamsher Niwas Singhdarbar, Rudra Shamsher Niwas Bhahadur Bhavan, and Thamel Narsingh camp. Whereas in the decade of 1930s, both local and palace teams commonly used the grounds of Singhdarbar, Chhauni, Gaucharan, Jawalakhel and Lainchaur for playing football. Despite of political instability at that time football was yet played enthusiastically during 1921 to 1990 by various teams without goal post, but the criterion was that the opponent team could follow the ball to the goal line.

Development

Football development in Nepal had only possible when ANFA started working from root level. Keeping this in mind, ANFA has given its work priority for building fundamental material for the association. At Very first, ANFA has built Hostel in Satdobato, Lalitpur where it has shown its solid dedication toward the development of Football game in Nepal by opening ANFA office with Playground. This work of ANFA has been appreciated everywhere. Before starting Goal project, Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) has also appreciated this work done by ANFA and provided an opportunity to represent as a model in FIFA congress. Then ANFA started to build technical centers in Chyasal of Lalitpur, Butwal, Rupandehi, Sunsari and Dharan under the roof of FIFA Goal project. Similarly, ANFA has planned to open technical centers in Mid-Western and Far-Western development regions of Nepal in Future.

ANFA Calendar for (2011)

KATHMANDU, AUG 16 - The All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) made public its programme calendar of 2011, listing 32 different programmes, out of which the national league looks to be the most important of all.

If things go as planned, the national league will be held on Nov. 17, the 22nd programme in the calendar. According to the ANFA, the national league will feature 10 teams — eight from Kathmandu and two from outside the valley. The teams from the valley will be the top eight teams out of the 18 participating teams of the Martyrs’ Memorial League scheduled to start from April 15, while the remaining two teams will be selected from the 37 districts affiliated with the ANFA.

The selection of the teams will be done from the ‘A’ division leagues featuring a minimum of 10 teams in each of the 37 districts, and will begin simultaneously with the Martyrs' Memorial League in Kathmandu. The top teams of each district — 37 teams — will then go through various other rounds before being downsized to two teams. The final round will be played in home and away system, meaning there will be a total of 18 games outside the valley. The winner will represent the country in the AFC President's Cup. The national league will also apply to all the B and C division clubs of the country featuring eight teams and six teams respectively.

ANFA President Ganesh Thapa said they estimated a budget of Rs. 30.75 million for the conduction of the national league and the Martyrs’ Memorial league. “The quota of teams for outside the valley may increase in the later years given their quality improves.”

Another important thing ANFA is set to introduce is the registration of players. The ANFA has already corresponded with all the clubs to complete the registration by August 26.

ANFA also announced its plan to upgrade the ANFA academy in the next three months or so. The current residential block will be expanded, while the ground is also set to be maintained with proper drainage systems.

While the 2011 calendar promises to keep the players busy round the year, the remaining events of 2010 include three knockout football tournament, HISSAN Cup (a weekly tournament of schools, where students are provided scholarships under ANFA recommendation) and national women’s league. Out of the 27 different programmes in the calendar this year (Nepali), five have already been completed. The next on list is the announcement of the best player of the year.

Meanwhile, Thapa said AFC President Bin Hamman, who had earlier provided for the treatment of former Nepal international Ranjan Bista, has pledged more from his personal account.

The family of late Gyalgen Lama is also set to get from the AFC. Lama had died of a cardiac arrest during the Coca Cola Inter-school Football Tournament.
