Albert Brough (MM) (third ¼ 1895[2] - first ¼ 1972 (aged 76–77 *see note)[3]) was a professional rugby league, and association football (soccer) footballer of the 1920s. He played representative level rugby league (RL) for Great Britain, and Lancashire, and at club level for Oldham, as a second-row, or loose forward/lock, i.e. number 11 or 12, or 13, during the era of contested scrums, and club level association football (soccer) for Barrow A.F.C., as a fullback, or goalkeeper.
Background
Albert Brough's birth as registered in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, he was awarded the Military Medal during World War I for bravery in the field, his death aged 76–77 (see note) was registered in Oldham, Lancashire.
Rugby league playing career
International honours
Albert Brough won caps for Great Britain (RL) while at Oldham in 1924 against Australia, and New Zealand.[1]
Challenge Cup Final appearances
Albert Brough played right-second-row, i.e. number 12, and scored a penalty goal in Oldham's 4–21 defeat by Wigan in the 1924 Challenge Cup Final during the 1923–24 season at Athletic Grounds, Rochdale on Saturday 12 April 1924.[4] About Albert Brough's time, there was Oldham's 16-3 victory over Hull Kingston Rovers in the 1925 Challenge Cup Final during the 1924–25 season at Headingley Stadium, the 3-9 defeat by Swinton in the 1926 Challenge Cup Final during the 1925–26 season, and the 26-7 victory over Swinton in the 1927 Challenge Cup Final during the 1926–27 season.
County Cup Final appearances
Albert Brough played right-second-row, i.e. number 12, in Oldham's 10–0 victory over St Helens Recs in the 1924 Lancashire County Cup Final during the 1924–25 season at The Willows, Salford on Saturday 22 November 1924.
Association football (soccer) playing career
Albert Brough normally played as a fullback, however he played goalkeeper in Barrow A.F.C.'s 1-4 defeat by Durham City A.F.C. in the last game of the 1922–23 Football League season of the Football League Third Division North at Kepier Haughs, Durham.
