Sharqia Governorate (Arabic: محافظة الشرقية Muḥāfẓet El Sharʔiya, Egyptian Arabic pronunciation: [eʃ.ʃæɾˈʔejjæ], rural: [eʃ.ʃæɾˈɡejje]) is the 3rd most populous of the governorates of Egypt. Located in the northern part of the country, its capital is the city of Zagazig.

Population

According to population estimates from 2015 the majority of residents in the governorate live in rural areas, with an urbanization rate of only 23.1%. Out of an estimated 6,485,412 people residing in the governorate, 4,987,707 people live in rural areas as opposed to only 1,497,705 in urban areas.[3]
