Água Izé is a village on São Tomé Island. Its population is 1,190 (2008 est.).[1] Ribeira Afonso is located about 1 km south and is also 17 km from the capital São Tomé through the EN2 (São Tomé-Porto Alegre).

Northeast is the island's closest landmass to the African mainland near Cape Lopez (or Cape Lopez) near Port-Gentil, Gabon, being 237.9 km apart.

The settlement is named after the stream. Its etymology is likely of Angola origin.

Near the town is Praia Izé, a notable feature of the area, another one is in the south and is known as Boca do Inferno, a rock formation. The most notable landmark is Roça Água Izé, a museum that is a former cocoa warehouse operated during Portuguese control of the island. The town was likely founded when the cocoa warehouse was built and its plantations. A residential area was later built which was once a worker's accommodation area for cocoa production. Before the 20th century, the island was one of the world's major cocoa producer, the area's cocoa once primarily shipped to Portugal and also shipped to other parts of Western Europe.

Agriculture remains to be the main industry of the village, cocoa plantations and other tropical crops dominate the area thought most of the area has been reforested today.

Climate

As to the whole island, its climate is a tropical savanna climate. Its weather is predominantly humid.

Sports

Água Izé has the only football (soccer) team known as UDESCAI, they last played in the São Tomé First Division in 2017 and finished in the last positions.
