After the Rain (恋は雨上がりのように, Koi wa Ameagari no You ni) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Jun Mayuzuki. The series began serialization in Shogakukan's Monthly Big Comic Spirits magazine in 2014, before moving to the magazine Weekly Big Comic Spirits in 2016. Nine volumes have been published as of November 2017. An anime television series adaptation by Wit Studio aired from January 12 to March 30, 2018, on the Noitamina programming block. A live-action film adaptation was released on May 25, 2018.[2] Vertical are releasing the manga in North America.[3]

Plot

After the Rain tells the story of Akira Tachibana, a high school student working part-time at a family restaurant, who starts falling in love with the manager, a forty five year old divorcee with a young son. Akira struggles to determine why she is falling for Masami, and whether or not to reveal her feelings to him.

A young high-school student with a piercing expression that makes many people slightly wary of her. She used to be part of the Track team, before a leg injury forced her to give up running. Having fallen into a depression, she met Masami who acted in a kind and friendly manner, offering her a free coffee when she took shelter at the restaurant in the rain. This act of kindness, began her infatuation with him. Despite her cold and inapproachable demeanor, she is actually rather timid and shy, especially when it comes to Masami.
Masami Kondo/Manager (近藤 正己/店長, Kondō Masami/Tenchō)

A 45 year old manager of a family restaurant. A kind, timid man, he is often criticized by his employees for being too weak. He is divorced and has a young son named Yuto. He is initially rather intimidated by Akira, whom he assumes actually hates him, while she, in fact, is merely staring at him in love. He is a fan of "Pure Literature" and loves reading books. Prior to becoming a restaurant manager, he wrote novels alongside his former college buddy and now-renowned writer Chihiro Kujo.

Akira's former buddy in the Track team, who remains steadfast in maintaining their friendship after Akira's injury.

Akira's fellow crew at the Restaurant who has a blonde hair and cheerful personality. She has a crush on Takashi.

A chef in the restaurant who had a sexual interest in Akira. When he learns about Akira's infatuation with Masami, he blackmails her by forcing her to date him in order to keep her secret intact.

Anime

An anime television series adaptation was announced in March 2017.[1] It is directed by Ayumu Watanabe and written by Deko Akao, featuring animation by Wit Studio, character designs by Yuka Shibata and music by Ryo Yoshimata.[17] The opening theme song is "Nostalgic Rainfall" by CHiCO with HoneyWorks, while the ending theme song is "Ref:rain" by Aimer. It aired from January 12 to March 30, 2018 on Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block. It ran for 12 episodes.[18] Amazon streamed the series worldwide on their Amazon Video service.

The story begins with Akira Tachibana listening music in her class. She is working at Cafe Restaurant Garden operated by her manager, Mr. Masami Kondo. One of the workers keep saying that Kondo is quite pathetic because he keeps apologizing to the customers. Tachibana takes the rest time at the employer room and found a boy sitting while doing his schoolwork. That boy was Kondo's son named Yuto and Tachibana helps teaching him how to properly play his flute outside of the restaurant. She met her former Track club teammate Haruka and talk to her about the upcoming tournament. While watching Kondo hangs the cloth on the chair, she remembers the first time she visits the restaurant during the rainy day when Kondo treats her with a cup of coffee and doing some kind of magic trick and make a milk appears on his hand. She takes the Kondo's cloth and sniff it with some kind of nostalgia until Kondo comes back and sees Tachibana sniffing the cloth. Tachibana awkwardly puts the cloth back and sit while blushing and eating the sandwich in front of Kondo. 
2 "Rain Drops on Green Leaves"

Normal business goes about at the cafe. Mr Kondo calls everyone and introduces a new part-timer, Yoshizawa, Tachibana's classmate. It's a slow day at the cafe so Yui asks Tachibana to name things that make her heart flutter to pass the time. While Tachibana's thinking, she looks over to where Mr Kondo is and quickly changes the subject and heads on out to the dining area. A customer forgets his cellphone so Tachibana hands it over to Mr Kondo and the latter chases after the customer. Mr Kondo unable to chase after the customer, who's riding a bike, decides to wait for him to come back. Tachibana standing beside him chases after the customer and was able to catch up with the customer giving him back his phone. Coming back, Tachibana collapses on the road and appears to be in pain. Mr Kondo and Tachibana head to a clinic nearby to get her ankle checked out. Leaving early, Tachibana recalls the events from earlier in the day. Mr Kondo calls Tachibana that night asking her if she's alright. The next day Mr Kondo visits Tachibana to apologize to Tachibana's mother regarding the previous day's incident. Tachibana inadvertently confesses to Mr Kondo. Mr Kondo takes it as her not hating him instead of a love confession. 
3 "Raining Tears"

Tachibana dreams about the previous days events and contemplates if she should've worded her confession differently. As Tachibana heads home from school, a junior classman and track team member notices her and persuades her to come to the field with her. As Tachibana watches from afar, she has a flashback of her running and celebrating with her friend. The track team invites Tachibana to a family restaurant but she declines. One of the members commented that Tachibana is currently working at a family restaurant and that they should go there. Tachibana blatantly says no but backtracks and says it's far. She then abruptly leaves as rain start falling. While walking, Tachibana has flashbacks of how she injured her leg and how she came and met Mr Kondo as rain starts pouring heavily. Mr Kondo goes out for a smoke and notices someone from a distance. Tachibana shows up and confesses to Mr Kondo again. She then walks away as Mr Kondo stood at the door, shocked. The next day, Tachibana is back at work being her usual self. Mr Kondo drives Tachibana to the train station and they talk about her confession.

Reception

The manga was ranked fourth in the 2016 edition of Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook.[21] The manga was nominated for the ninth Manga Taishō Awards,[22] and was ranked seventh.[23] The manga has 2 million copies in print.[24]
