Abhay Kumar (Hindi: अभय कुमार)/Abhay K. (born 1980) is an Indian poet-diplomat.[1][2][3] His books include The Seduction of Delhi,[4][5] The Eight-Eyed Lord of Kathmandu,[6][7] CAPITALS[8] and 100 Great Indian Poems[9] among others.[10][11][12] His writings cover poetry, art, memoir, global democracy and digital diplomacy.[13][14][15][16] He wrote the Earth Anthem[17][18][19][20][21] and the South Asian Anthem[22] spurring search for an official SAARC Anthem.[23] He has called for inscribing Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam in the premises of the United Nations[24] and for the establishment of a National Poetry Library in India.[25]

He received the SAARC Literary Award for his contribution to contemporary South Asian Poetry[26][27] and was nominated for the Pushcart Prize 2013.[28] In 2011, he also received the Gov 2.0 award on behalf of the Public Diplomacy Division, Ministry of External Affairs.[13][29] He has been featured as a nominee on the longlist of the Forbes India 100 Celebrity list[30] and has been honoured with Asia-Pacific Excellence Award in 2014.[31] His The Seduction of Delhi was shortlisted for Muse India-Satish Verma Young Writer Award 2015.[32] He is a contributing writer to the Silk Routes Project of the International Writing Programme of the University of Iowa.[33] He has been profiled by noted novelist Chandrahas Choudhury and has been called "The Sage Indian of Brasilia" by Mint Lounge, India's premier weekend magazine.[34] Maharaja Ganga Singh University, Bikaner, Rajasthan, India awarded the first Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)degree on the subject 'Cultural Construct of Self:A Critical Study of Abhay Kumar's Poetry' in July 2018.[35]

Early life

Abhay was born and raised at Chhabilapur near Rajgir in Nalanda district of Bihar. He studied at the Kirori Mal College Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 2003. He studied Russian language, history and literature at the Moscow State University, Nepali language at the Tribhuvan University, U.S. Foreign Policy at the George Washington University[36] and how writers write poetry at the International Writing Program and the University of Iowa.[37] He speaks Hindi, English, Russian, Nepali and Portuguese.

Career

Abhay K is one of the literary flag-bearers of contemporary Indian poetry.[38][39] He features among five Indian poets everyone should know about.[40] Major Indian poet Jayanta Mahapatra thinks "qualities of love, tenderness and compassion set Abhay K's work apart from much of the general run of current poetics." [41] As per the Hindu Book Review- "Abhay K.'s words don’t sit outside and observe. They dig in, making their subject their home, and then they turn outwards, watching the landscape, the people, the city, change." [42] His poetic works startle and heal [43] and give humanistic outlook to Indian English Poetry[44][45][46] making subtle use of metaphor and imagery.[47] His first book titled River Valley to Silicon Valley(2007)was a memoir that also contained his first poem 'Soul Song'.[10] His poetry collections include The Eight-Eyed Lord of Kathmandu (2017|The Onslaught Press UK), The Seduction of Delhi (2015|Bloomsbury India), Remains (2012|HarAnand), Candling the Light (2011|Yash), Fallen Leaves of Autumn (2010|Art Express,St. Petersburg) and Enigmatic Love: Love Poems from Moscow(2009|Bookwell).

Editor

As an editor, he has edited a special edition of The Enchanting Verses Literary Review on Contemporary Indian Poetry in English,[48] CAPITALS,an anthology of poems on capital cities of the world; and 100 Great Indian Poems, an anthology covering over 3000 years of Indian poetry written in 28 languages. He co-founded the 'Poetry at the Monument' poetry movement in Delhi,[49] 'Poemandu'in Kathmandu, Nepal[50] and 'Cha com Letras' in Brasilia, Brazil.[51]

His poem Hiuen Tsang recounts the arduous journey of the Chinese monk Xuanzang from China to India and invokes him to rise up and come back to India again.[71] while his Nalanda poems evocatively recount fall and rise of Nalanda .[72] His poem "Foreign Service" is a take-off on Shakespeare's "All the world's a stage" summarizing diplomatic careers.[73] while the poem "Gogol" alludes to the works of the writer Gogol such as "The Nose", "The Overcoat", "Nevsky Prospect", Dead Souls and The Government Inspector.[74] His poem "Ghalib" is a glimpse of tragic life of poet Ghalib.[75] Kumar's poems have been translated into Irish by Irish poet Gabriel Rosenstock[76] and in Russian by noted Russian poet Andrei Rodossky,[69] in Turkish by noted Turkish poet Müesser Yeniay, in Slovenian by Slovenian poet Katja Gorečan, in Italian by Italian poet Franz Laszlo Melas,[77] in Chinese by Chinese poet Arthur Zhang,[78] in Nepali by Nepalese poet Kishore Nepal, in Portuguese by Brazilian poets Antonio Miranda Marcos Freitas,[79] Ana Paula Arendt[80] and Francesca Cricelli [81] and in Spanish by Spanish poet Alicia Silvestre Miralles.[82] He said in an interview to Alok Mishra, "Poetry for me is what the soul is for the body. Literary Prizes

He was nominated for the Pushcart Prize for his three poems ‘What's a Beach’, ‘Masseur’ and ‘Everything has Secrets’.[126] He was also awarded SAARC Literary Award for his contribution to South Asian poetry.[26][27] His poetry collection 'The Seduction of Delhi' was shortlisted for Muse India Satish Verma Young Writer Award 2015.

The Seduction Of Delhi

Kumar's collection of poems The Seduction of Delhi became a bestselling poetry book after its launch in January 2015.[127] It was released by Arvind Krishna Mehrotra at the Jaipur Literature Festival.[128] T.S. Eliot Prize winning poet George Szirtes writes about The Seduction of Delhi- "One may visit a city and one may live in it. To experience it as a presence and as a history is more than either and to experience it as poetry is sublime. This is a beautiful way to be introduced to a great city as both specific and essence." The Eight-eyed Lord of Kathmandu

The Eight-eyed Lord of Kathmandu is a collection of poems on the UNESCO World Heritage sites, festivals, historical personalities, landscapes and prominent places of Nepal written during his stay in Nepal from 2012-2015.[7]

In his book, Kumar personifies spaces such as Pashupatinath or Changunarayan or Patan that make up Kathmandu that are also UNESCO World Heritage sites. He writes about the different jatras—from Gai Jatra to Rato Machindranath. He also writes about places inside and outside of Kathmandu...he moves on from personifying spaces to writing about real personalities such as Laxmi Prasad Devkota and Araniko.This is perhaps the kind of poetry we need now, in the aftermath of the Great Quake: poetry that can heal. It contains an honesty that is difficult to find in jaded writers.

Jatra

Jatra is Nepali translation of his collection of poems on Nepal titled The Eight-eyed Lord of Kathmandu and paints a poetic portrait of Nepal.[134] It was launched by the Vice-President of Nepal.[135]

He is currently editing a global anthology of poetic-portraits of about two hundred capital cities of the world[137] and is also the guest-editor of the special issue of The Enchanting Verses Literary Review on contemporary Indian English Poetry.[138]

The Prophecy of Brasilia

The Prophecy of Brasilia is a bilingual collection of 61 poems on Brasilia. These poems give the newly built city its own literature from the eye of a stranger.[139]

CAPITALS

CAPITALS is an anthology of poems on the capital cities of the world edited by Abhay K. One of its kind, this poetry anthology brings poets together from across the planet. The contributors include Derek Walcott, Vijay Seshadri, George Szirtes, Ruth Padel among other prominent poets from 185 countries. It was launched at the Poets House in New York [140] Jaipur Literature Festival in India,[141][142] India International Centre, New Delhi[143] and SOAS, London.[144] In its introduction Abhay writes that he wanted to find a poem on every capital city on the planet and he almost succeeded in creating a poetry atlas of the world's capitals.[145]

100 Great Indian Poems

100 Great Indian Poems is an anthology of Indian poetry edited by Abhay K. covering over 3000 years of Indian poetry and 28 Indian languages.[149] It has been translated into Irish by poet Gabriel Rosenstock and Portuguese by 14 reputed translators. Its Portuguese edition has been published by the University of São Paulo.[150][151][152] 100 Great Indian Poems aims at bringing poems at the center of poetic discourse instead of poets.[153]

100 Great Indian Poems earns its pedigree by putting the poem first. It randomises the process of reading which in the case of a multi-lingual society like ours, should be the norm. That said, not all poets translate well, and as is the case with others, aren’t really translated well either. Marathi, Hindi, and Urdu especially, are the kind of linguistic deltas whose musicality is literally impossible to transpose, let alone translate. But that doesn’t meant the world does not deserve a reading of Indian poetry. It does, it must. Not only in English though, but rather through it.

Anthems

Earth Anthem

In 2013 Abhay released Earth Anthem, a song intended as an anthem for the planet Earth, written by him in eight languages including six official UN languages — Arabic, Chinese, French, English, Russian and Spanish — as well as Hindi and Nepali. It was set to music by Sapan Ghimire and sung by Shreya Sotang from Nepal.[155] It has been translated into 30 languages including Tamil, Hindi, Nepali, Russian, Chinese, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Finnish, Korean, Turkish, Arabic, Estonian, German, Bhasa, Czech, Japanese, Tibetan,Slovenian, Montenegrin, Kazhak, Khmer and Uzbek and has received acclaim[18][156] and is being used by CBSE.[157]

In 2014, Abhay suggested that UNESCO stage a global online competition to establish an official anthem for the planet, but the organization felt unable to conduct a global competition due to its "limited financial and human resources".[158][159] The Permanent Delegation of India, Paris had recommended Kumar's proposal of an official anthem for UNESCO's consideration.[160]

On the World Environment Day 2017, Abhay K's Earth Anthem composed by L. Subramaniam and sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy was released in Brasilia.[161] On this occasion the Brazilian version of the Earth Anthem sung by Babi Cereja was also released.[162] Earth Anthem was lauded by Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi[163] and was performed by the Symphony Orchestra of Cláudio Santoro National Theater, Brasilia in February 2018.[164]

SAARC Anthem

Abhay wrote the SAARC Anthem in Bengali, Dzongkha, Maldivian, English, Hindi, Nepali, Pashto, Sinhalese, and Urdu, in an attempt to attempts to foster South Asian consciousness and bring the member states of SAARC together.[166][167] It has spurred discussions on the need for an official SAARC Anthem.[168] Columnist Stanley Weiss hopes that the South Asian leaders will choose to move forward in the words of the SAARC Anthem.[169] Nepal's foreign minister has expressed the need for a SAARC anthem to connect SAARC nations.[170] SAARC Anthem was to be played at the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi in presence of the SAARC leaders.[171] Nepal at the 18th summit in Kathmandu in November 2014 is planning to introduce proposal for a SAARC Anthem in the agenda of summit when heads of all member states meet here.[172] The song penned by Abhay K may become SAARC Anthem.[173] Pooja Bhatt and Mahesh Bhatt have praised SAARC anthem.[174]

Diplomatic

Kumar is an Indian Foreign Service officer and has served in positions at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of the government of India and at the Indian missions and posts abroad in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kathmandu. At the MEA headquarters in New Delhi he served as the Under Secretary Digital diplomacy and sent the first tweet after setting up official Twitter account of the Ministry of External Affairs of India in 2010.[175][176] He served as the spokesperson of the Embassy of India, Kathmandu from 2012-2015.[177] He was appointed as the Director of the Nehru Centre, London in March 2015.[178][179] Subsequently, he was appointed as India's Deputy High Commissioner to Australia in August 2015.[180] He currently serves as India´s Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Brasilia, Brazil. He proposed celebration of the International Day of Diplomats on the United Nations Day [181] which was celebrated in Brasilia for the first time on 24th Oct, 2017 with the participation of diplomats from several countries.[182]

He was also assistant editor of India Perspectives, a monthly magazine published by the Ministry of External Affairs in 17 languages from September 2011 to July 2012.[183][184]

Artistic

Abhay's art work focus on planetary consciousness.[185] He has exhibited his paintings in St. Petersburg, Paris and New Delhi.[186][187] His art has received good reviews.[188] Poetry-paintings of Abhay K and Italian artist Tarshito exhibited at the National Academy of Art, New Delhi highlight Delhi's glorious past.[189]
