Abby Lea Finkenauer (born 1988 or 1989)[1][2] is an American politician serving as the member of the Iowa House of Representatives from the 99th district since 2015. A member of the Democratic Party, her committee assignments include Economic Growth, Labor, Transportation and Ways and Means. She is also a member of the Economic Development Appropriations Subcommittee.[2]

She is the Democratic nominee for Iowa's 1st congressional district in the United States House of Representatives 2018 elections.[3]

Early life and education

Finkenauer grew up in Sherrill, Iowa.[3][4] Her father is a welder and her mother works at a public school.[5]

She graduated from Hempstead High School in Dubuque, Iowa.[3] In 2011, Finkenauer graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa with a bachelor's degree in public relations.[6]

Early political career

In 2006, Finkenauer was a page for U.S. Representative Jim Nussle, a Republican who represented Northeast Iowa in Congress.[2][4] The following year, Finkenauer was a page for Pat Murphy, the Democratic Speaker of the House in Iowa.[2][4]

In 2007, Finkenauer was the Iowa volunteer coordinator for the Joe Biden presidential campaign.[4] She was later legislative aide for Iowa Democratic State Representative Todd Taylor and communications specialist for the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque.[4]

Finkenauer was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives in 2014 and won reelection unopposed in 2016.[3][7] She was 25 when first elected to the Iowa House of Representatives.

In May 2017, Finkenauer announced her candidacy for the congressional seat currently held by Republican Rod Blum.[8] She won the Democratic primary and will face Blum in the November 2018 general election.

As of September 2018, her race is classified as Lean Democratic or Tilt Democratic by 3 major rating firms.[9]

If elected, she would become the youngest woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and she would become the first woman to represent Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives.[3][10][11]

In October 2018, it was announced that Barack Obama endorsed Finkenauer.[12]
