2019 structural changes to local government in England

Structural changes to local government in England will be effected in 2019 and 2020.

Dorset

  • Status: Confirmed

On 1 April 2019, five districts will be merged into a new Dorset unitary authority, and three districts will be merged into a Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole unitary authority.

Northamptonshire

  • Status: Proposed

The existing Northamptonshire County Council and seven district councils are expected to be replaced with two unitary authorities, North Northamptonshire and West Northamptonshire, in April 2020.[1]

Suffolk

  • Status: Confirmed

On 1 April 2019, two districts will be merged into West Suffolk and two districts will be merged into East Suffolk.

Somerset

  • Status: Confirmed

The Taunton Deane and West Somerset districts will be merged into Somerset West and Taunton.
