The 2018 season is the 142nd season of competitive soccer in Canada.[1]
News and events
John Herdman was named as head coach of the men's national team in January, replacing Octavio Zambrano.[2] Mauro Biello was later named assistant coach of the men's national team.[3] Kenneth Heiner-Møller was named as head coach of the women's national team following Herdman's departure.
As part of the United 2026 World Cup bid with the United States and Mexico, the Canadian Soccer Association announced on March 15 that the three potential Canadian host cities were Edmonton, Montreal, and Toronto.[4] The 2026 FIFA World Cup was awarded to the United bid on June 13.[5]
The Canadian Premier League announced that it will kick off in April 2019,[6] with Paul Beirne as its president,[7] David Clanachan as its commissioner,[8] and James Easton as its head of soccer operations.[9]
On March 28, the Canadian Premier League and the Canadian Soccer Association announced the creation of the Canadian Soccer Business (CSB); an organization "representing commercial assets and inventory for marquee soccer properties in Canada", including "all corporate partnerships and broadcast rights related to Canada Soccer's core assets including its national teams, along with all rights associated with the CPL".[10]
The Canadian Premier League announced a number of new teams for its inaugural 2019 season, at present including York 9 FC (announced May 10),[11] Cavalry FC (May 17),[12]HFX Wanderers FC (May 25),[13] Valour FC, FC Edmonton, Forge FC and Pacific FC.
Women's national team captain, Christine Sinclair, was appointed to the Order of Canada on January 24.[14]

Selection procedure- Four US-based teams qualify for the 2019 CONCACAF Champions League. Due to a change in format to the tournament, two qualifiers will come from each of the 2017 and 2018 MLS seasons.[15] This combined qualification method will be used for the 2019 tournament only. For the 2018 season, the following teams will qualify:
- The winner of MLS Cup 2018;
- The winner of the 2018 U.S. Open Cup (Houston Dynamo)
One Canada-based team qualifies for the 2019 CONCACAF Champions League, also entering at the second phase (NOTE: Canadian teams cannot qualify through MLS):- The winner of the 2018 Canadian Championship (Toronto FC)
- The winner of MLS Cup 2018;
- Four US-based teams qualify for the 2019 CONCACAF Champions League. Due to a change in format to the tournament, two qualifiers will come from each of the 2017 and 2018 MLS seasons.[15] This combined qualification method will be used for the 2019 tournament only. National Women's Soccer League
No Canadian teams play in this league, though eleven players from the Canada women's national soccer team are allocated to its teams by the Canadian Soccer Association.[16] It is considered a Division 1 women's league in the United States soccer league system.
