İbrahim Doğuş (born July 1980)[1] is a British politician, entrepreneur and restaurateur. He is founder of the Centre for Turkey Studies. Since May 2018, Doğuş has served as a Lambeth Borough councillor representing the Bishop's Ward. He is also the Deputy Mayor of the borough.

In the 2017 UK general election, he was the parliamentary candidate for the Labour Party for the Cities of London and Westminster constituency.

Personal life

He is the son of Kurdish refugees from Turkey who arrived in the UK in 1994.[2][3] In a 2017 interview, he stated that although he was born into a Muslim family, he did not practice any religion.[4] He has two children.[5]

Career

Business

Doğuş is a former waiter, and owner of three restaurants: Troia, in Waterloo, London, Westminster Kitchen, near Westminster Bridge, and Cucina.[3][4] He attracted media attention in 2017 when he fed hundreds of emergency service workers for free at Troia in the wake of the 2017 Westminster attack: all three of his restaurants were located in the cordoned-off exclusion zone near the attack.[4][5]

He founded the Centre for Turkey Studies (CEFTUS), which organises the British Kebab Awards.[6][7] The British Kebab Awards have been presented by several prominent politicians including Jeremy Corbyn and Sadiq Khan.

Doğuş is owner of the beer brand Bira, which is produced under contract by Molson Coors UK, and marketed as the world's first beer as accompaniment to kebabs.[8]

He established the free community newspaper Lambeth Life.[9]

Politics

He is a commentator on Turkish, Kurdish and UK politics.[10][11][12][13][14][15]

Doğuş became a community activist in the early 2000s, and was shot while trying to combat drug crime in Hackney, where he lived.[16][17][18]

He is founder of the Centre for Kurdish Progress[19][20][21] and the SME4Labour group.[22][23][24] Doğuş has long been an active organiser for the Turkish and Kurdish community in London and the UK.[8]

As the parliamentary candidate for the Labour Party for the Cities of London and Westminster constituency in the June 2017 UK general election,[25][26] he gained an 9.25% swing for Labour, and came second with 14,857 votes (38.4%). The following year he was elected as a member of Lambeth London Borough Council for the Bishop's ward,[9][27] and in May 2018 he was selected by Labour to be the next deputy mayor of the borough.[9]
