First attested in the Bullyu dugongbu si eonhae (分類杜工部詩諺解 / 분류두공부시언해), 1481, as Middle Korean 업시너기다 (Yale: epsinekita).

From 없— (eop(s)-, “not have”) + (i, suffix) + 너기— (neogi-) (> modern 여기— (yeogi-, “to consider; to think; to deem”)) + (da, ending).
