Etymology

Compound of (beni, crimson (color); rouge (makeup)) + 差し (sashi, applying, putting on, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, continuative or stem form) of verb 差す sasu, “to put on, to apply”) + (yubi, finger). From the common practice of applying rouge using one's fourth or ring finger.[1]
