Etymology

Older form is ねぶる, from the same root with Old Japanese (nu) (whence 寝る (neru, to sleep; to lie down)), ultimately from Proto-Japonic *ná- (cf. 寝す (nasu, (honorific) to sleep)). Cognate with Northern Amami-Oshima ねぃぶりゅり (nɨburjuri), Okinawan にんじゅん (niɴdʑuɴ), Miyako にぅ゙ (niʋ) and Yonaguni にんどぅん (niɴduɴ).[1]
