Compound of 目覚まし (mezamashi, “waking, wakeup”, the 連 (れん)用 (よう)形 (けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 目 (め)覚 (ざ)ます (mezamasu, “to wake up”).) +‎ 時計 (tokei, “clock”).[1][2] The tokei changes to dokei as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
