Compound of 目覚まし (mezamashi, waking, wakeup, the  (れん) (よう) (けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb  () ()ます (mezamasu, to wake up).) + 時計 (tokei, clock).[1][2] The tokei changes to dokei as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
