Etymology

First used by Qin Shi Huang (literally First Emperor of the Qin dynasty) as the self-proclaimed 始皇帝 (literally First Emperor), from (sovereign) + (emperor). The two component words were originally the titles of the gods known as the 三皇五帝 (Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors).
