Blend of 懐かしい (natsukashii, nostalgic, dear) + メロディー (merodī, melody, song, tune), as a shortening of the phrase 懐かしメロディー (Natsukashi no Merodī), the name of a radio program broadcast by NHK from 1945 through 1955.[1][2][3]
