やさかにのまがたま (Yasakani no Magatama): an artist's depiction of the (unseen) Imperial Regalia of Japan, showing the Yasakani no Magatama as the jade jewel on the bottom.
Etymology
Compound of 八尺瓊 (yasakani, “long or large jewel”, literally “eight-foot jewel”) + の (no, possessive particle) + 勾玉 (magatama, “curved jewel”, type of ancient curved bead resembling a bear claw). The “eight-foot” may have originally referred to a long cord or necklace on which such magatama beads were strung, as magatama themselves were never so large.[1][2]
Pronunciation
