Etymology

From Proto-Hellenic *hízdō, from Proto-Indo-European *sisdō, *sizdō a reduplicated form of Proto-Indo-European *sed- (sit). Cognates include Sanskrit सीदति (sī́dati), Latin sīdō and Umbrian [script needed] (sistu). Compare ἕζομαι (hézomai).

From a nonexistent active present *ἕζω (passive ἕζομαι the following forms seem to be produced (later forms):

  • εἷσα,
  • middle aorist εἱσάμην (with the sense ἱδρύω (dedicate temples statues)),
  • middle future εἵσομαι,
  • passive perfect εἷμαι

Inflection

The second-person singular imperative is ἵζε (híze) and not *ἷζε (*hîze).
