Etymology

From Proto-Hellenic *heďďomai, from Proto-Indo-European *séd-ye-, from *sed-. Compare ἵζω (hízō, set). Cognate with Old English sittan (English sit), Old Norse sitja and Old High German sizzen.

Pronunciation

Verb

ἕζομαι • (hézomai)

(chiefly poetic)
  1. I sit, sit oneself

Usage notes

There is no active present *ἕζω, but there are transitive tenses as though they derive from it (later forms): See ἵζω (hízō) for

  • εἷσα,
  • middle aorist εἱσάμην (with the sense ἱδρύω (dedicate temples statues)),
  • middle future εἵσομαι,
  • passive perfect εἷμαι
