From โปรด (bpròot, “to please; to have mercy (on); to show kindness (to); etc”) + เกล้า (glâao, “hair bun; head”) + โปรด (bpròot, “to please; to have mercy (on); to show kindness (to); etc”) + กระหม่อม (grà-mɔ̀m, “fontanel; head”); literally "to have mercy on the heads, to show kindness to the heads". The heads probably refer to the heads of a monarch's subjects, for the monarch is referred to as พระเจ้าอยู่หัว.
