Etymology

From Sanskrit अभय (abhaya, absence or removal of fear; security; safety; protection from fear or danger; giving safety; etc.) or Pali abhaya (ibid.). Cognate with Khmer អភ័យ (ʾɑphɨy, fearlessness; indulgence; forgiveness; to pardon; to forgive) and Lao ອະໄພ (’a phai, to forgive; to pardon; safety; security; pardon; forgiveness). Equivalent to (ɔɔ, no; not; without) + ภัย (pai, fear; danger).
