From Pali vihāra (“monastery”) or Sanskrit विहार (vihāra, “academy; sanctuary; temple”); perhaps via Old Khmer vihāra (“monastery”). Compare Modern Khmer វិហារ (vihiə); Lao ວິຫານ (wi hān); Burmese ဝိဟာရ (wi.hara.).

วิหาร • (wí-hǎan)

1. religious compound; monastery; place of worship.
   • 1 Chronicles 10:10, KJV:

     เขาเอาเครื่องอาวุธของพระองค์ไปไว้ในวิหารพระของเขา

     kǎo ao krʉ̂ʉang-aa-wút kɔ̌ɔng prá-ong bpai wái nai wí-hǎan prá kɔ̌ɔng kǎo

     And they put his armour in the house of their gods,

   • 1 Corinthians 3:17, KJV:

     ถ้าผู้ใดทำลายวิหารของพระเจ้า พระเจ้าจะทรงทำลายผู้นั้น เพราะวิหารของพระเจ้าเป็นที่บริสุทธิ์ และท่านทั้งหลายเป็นวิหารนั้น

     tâa pûu-dai tam-laai wí-hǎan kɔ̌ɔng prá-jâao prá-jâao jà song tam-laai pûu nán prɔ́ wí-hǎan kɔ̌ɔng prá-jâao bpen tîi bɔɔ-rí-sùt lɛ́ tân táng-lǎai bpen wí-hǎan nán

     If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

From Sanskrit विहार (vihāra, “absence; enjoyment; pleasure; etc”). Cognate with Khmer វិហារ (vihiə).
