From Sanskrit व्यापार (vyāpāra, service; serving), according to Assistant Professor Chirapat Prapandvidya, associate fellow of the Royal Society of Thailand in the field of classical languages.[1] Cognate with Lao ພະຍາບານ (pha nyā bān), Khmer ព្យាបាល (pyiəbaal).
