From Old Khmer palãta (assistant chief; deputy chief). Compare Angkorian Old Khmer phlās, plass. Cognate with Modern Khmer បាឡាត់ (baalat), បាល័ត (baalŏət), បាល័ដ្ឋ (baalŏətthɑɑ).
