Borrowed from Japanese 力車 (rikisha), an abbreviation of 人力車 (じんりきしゃ jinrikisha), from Middle Chinese 人力 (MC ȵiɪn lɨk̚, “human power”) + (MC kɨʌ, t͡ɕʰia, “cart”) (compare Chinese 人力車人力车 (rénlìchē)). Invented in Japan circa 1869.
