From Sanskrit সৰু (saru, fine, thin). Cognate with Sylheti ꠢꠥꠞꠥ (huru, small, little), Hajong হুৰু (huru), Bishnupriya Manipuri হুরু (huru), Bengali সরু (sôru, thin, slender, narrow), Oriya ସରୁ (sôru, thin).
