ঔটেঙা

Assamese

ঔটেঙা

Etymology

From (ou) + টেঙা (teṅa). According to a folk story, its name derived from (ou), which means "that!" or "hey!" or "oh!", and টেঙা (teṅa), which means "sour". In Assamese টেঙা (teṅa) is used for many sour foods. Another possibility is that the fruit looks like Assamese character (ou). Cognate with Oriya ଓଉ (ou), see Ouu khatta.
