From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hrā́ȷ́niH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hrā́ȷ́niH, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃rḗǵnih₂. Cognate with Latin regina, Old Irish rígan. Related to राजन् (rā́jan, king).
