Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *táṭṣati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *táĉšati, from Proto-Indo-European *tḗtḱ-ti ~ *tétḱ-n̥ti, from *tetḱ- (to create, cut). Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬌 𐬙𐬁𐬱𐬙𐬌 (auui tāšti). Compare also Old Armenian տաշեմ (tašem), an Iranian borrowing.
