Etymology

From the root ܙ-ܘ-ܥ (z-w-ʿ) related to moving. Compare Hebrew זִיעַ (zîaʿ). The sense of "vowel diacritic" is a calque of Arabic حَرَكَة (ḥaraka(t)).
