From the root م س ح (m-s-ḥ), related to مَسَحَ (masaḥa, to anoint). Cognate to the Hebrew מָשִׁיחַ (mashíakh), whence the Ancient Greek borrowing Μεσσίας (Messías) and the Greek calque Χριστός (Christós), thus the English terms "Messiah" and "Christ".
