Derived from the active participle of أَثَارَ (ʾaṯāra, to arouse, to excite, to provoke, to stimulate, to irritate), from the root ث و ر (ṯ-w-r); compare ثَارَ (ṯāra, to be aroused), ثَوْرَة (ṯawra, excitement, uprising, revolution).
