سالار

Persian

Etymology

From Middle Persian srdʾl (sālār), a pre-Middle Persian compound of sl (sar, “head) + d’l (dār, “having”), with the regular phonetic shift *sar(a)-dàr(a)- > *sardàr > *sarlàr > sālār. Compare دل, گل for the phonetic change, and Persian سردار, a borrowing or a synthetic compound of the aforementioned parts.
