From the root ء ت ي (ʾ-t-y); compare أَتَى (ʾatā, to come, to bring).

      وَاتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ الَّذِي آتَيْنَاهُ آيَاتِنَا فَانْسَلَخَ مِنْهَا فَأَتْبَعَهُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَكَانَ مِنَ الْغَاوِينَ
      wātlu ʿalayhim nabaʾa allaḏī ʾātaynāhu ʾāyātinā fānsalaḵa minhā faʾatbaʿahu š-šayṭānu fakāna mina l-ḡāwīna
      And recite to them the news of him whom we gave [notice of] Our signs but detached himself from them, so Satan pursued him and he became of the misled.
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 4:74:
      فَلْيُقَاتِلْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّٰهِ الَّذِينَ يَشْرُونَ الْحَيَوٰةَ الدُّنْيَا بِالْآخِرَةِ ۚ وَمَن يُقَاتِلْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّٰهِ فَيُقْتَلْ أَوْ يَغْلِبْ فَسَوْفَ نُؤْتِيهِ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا
      falyuqātil fī sabīli l-lāhi allaḏīna yašrūna l-ḥayāta d-dunyā bi-l-ʾāḵirati; waman yuqātil fī sabīli llāhi fayuqtal ʾaw yaḡlib, fasawfa nuʾtīhi ʾajran ʿaẓīman
      Let those who barter the life of this world for the Hereafter fight in the Cause of Allah; and whoso fights in the Cause of Allah and is killed or obtains victory, we shall bestow upon him a great reward.
  2. (ditransitive) to give as a gift; to reward
