آباد

Arabic

Noun

آبَاد (ʾābād) m pl

  1. plural of أَبَد (ʾabad)

Persian

Etymology

From Middle Persian ʾp̄ʾt' (ābād, populous, thriving, prosperous). Per Lubotsky, from Common Iranian *āpāta-, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂- (to protect), whence also پاییدن (pâyidan). Compare also Old Armenian ապատ (apat) and անապատ (anapat).
