ագանիմ

Old Armenian

Etymology 1

From Proto-Indo-European. The initial հ- (h-), found in the alternative form հագանիմ (haganim) and in modern Armenian հագնել (hagnel), is old and probably has an etymological value. The Proto-Indo-European root has been variously reconstructed as *h₂ew-, *h₃ew-, *h₃ow-. Cognates include Latin ex-uō (undress, take off), ind-uō (put on, clothe), Avestan 𐬀𐬊𐬚𐬭𐬀 (aoθra, shoe), Lithuanian aũti (to take off shoes), Russian обу́ть (obútʹ) and perhaps Hittite [script needed] (unu-, to adorn, decorate, lay (the table)). See also առագաստ (aṙagast), օդ (ōd), օթոց (ōtʿocʿ).
