Old Armenian

Etymology

Cognate with Ancient Greek -αν- (-an-), which was often added simultaneously with a nasal infix, e.g. λιμπάνω (limpánō, to be absent).

Suffix

-ան- (-an-)

  1. present stem extension found in certain verbs
  2. forming inchoative verbs
    չորանամčʿoranamto grow dry

Usage notes

A very productive suffix. Often used to remake already-existing verbs, as in անիծանեմ (anicanem), հարցանեմ (harcʿanem), լքանեմ (lkʿanem).
