From Proto-Slavic *mirъ (peace; world), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *mejHrós (cognates include Old Lithuanian mieras (peace) and Latvian miêrs (peace)), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *mey- (to tie); see also Ancient Greek μίτος (mítos, warp thread), Old Persian 𐎷𐎰𐎼 (mi-θ-r), and Sanskrit मित्र (mitra).[1]
