From Old East Slavic людиѥ (ljudije) and Old Church Slavonic людиє (ljudie), from Proto-Slavic *ljudъ, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁lewdʰ- (“men, people”). Cognate with Lithuanian liaudis (“people”), Latvian ļaudis (“people”), German Leute (“people”), Ancient Greek ἐλεύθερος (eleútheros), Latin līber, līberī.
