     I want to stop at the large shopping complexes—malls, or kanyons, as they are called here. A mall is a large store under a roof, a favorite place for walking and entertainment. According to a study that was done, 28 percent go to the mall not for shopping, but just for fun—to show off, to look at others. Malls were first built in America. In Israel, they appeared for another reason: It feels nice to walk around, look at the new fads—and all this without the heat and humidity: air conditioners.

     But Azrieli counfounded skeptics; in 1985, the first mall “Ayalon” started operating in the suburb of Tel Aviv Ramat Gan. After that, Azrieli is building a mall in Beer Sheba and, as some experts insist, the largest mall in the Middle East in Jerusalem.
