From Proto-Slavic *gryz-. Cognate with Russian грызть (gryztʹ), Serbo-Croatian гри̏сти/grȉsti, Slovene gristi, Slovak hrýzť. Non-Slavic cognates include Old Armenian կրծեմ (krcem) and probably Gothic 𐌺𐍂𐌹𐌿𐍃𐍄𐌰𐌽 (kriustan, grate, grind).
