From Proto-Hellenic *méďďōn, from Proto-Indo-European *méǵh₂yōs‎, from *méǵh₂s (“great”), from which comes μέγᾰς (mégas). The ει (ei) is a long vowel that developed by analogy with κρείττων (kreíttōn) and ἀμείνων (ameínōn).
