Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *awena, an innovation based on *au̯e 'down, off' (cf. Sanskrit अव (áva, id)), replacing Proto-Indo-European *dhē 'to place, put'. The original meaning must have been 'to put down, to put aside', as in Latin pōnere (to put)[1]. Alternatively from From Proto-Albanian *u̯enō, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁wen- (to spread)[2]
