Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *ātuma, related to Proto-Germanic *ēþmaz (“breath”) and Sanskrit आत्मन् (ātmán, “blow, breath, soul”), where the inlaut -y- may be secondary[1]. Probably influenced by a dialectal variant of Proto-Indo-European *dhūmos 'smoke'. Compare Old High German toum (“vapor, haze, mist”), Ancient Greek θῡμός (thūmós, “breath, life, soul, heart, spirit, courage, mind, temper, will, anger, wrath”), Latin fumus (“smoke, steam, vapor”).
