From Middle Dutch treffen, from Middle High German treffen, from Old High German treffan. Replaced rare Middle Dutch drepen, from Old Dutch drepan. Both ultimately descend from Proto-Germanic *drepaną.

The native Luxemburgish form would be *driefen (or *dreffen); the verb is not inherited anywhere in Central Franconian. Further cognates include English drib, Icelandic drepa, Swedish dräpa.
