Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *ϑeuk-, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱeuk- ('to glow, burn, lighten'). Cognates include Avestan 𐬯𐬀𐬊𐬐 (saok), Kurdish sotin and Persian سوختن (suxtan) ('to burn'). Alternatively to be compared with Lithuanian senkù, sèkti (to sink, to dry up), Gothic sigqan (sigqan, to sink), Slavic *sęknǫti to dry up.
