From Proto-Slavic *sěsti (stem *sęd-), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *sind-, from Proto-Indo-European *sísdeti (to be sitting down), thematic i-reduplicated verb of the root *sed- (to sit). Cognates include Avestan 𐬵𐬌𐬛𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (hidaiti, he is sitting), Sanskrit सीदति (sī́dati), Ancient Greek ἵζω (hízō) and Latin sīdō.
