From Vulgar Latin *singlutiāre, from singultiāre, from Latin singultāre, present active infinitive of singultō, from singultus (sobbing). The (Vulgar) Latin was altered under the influence of gluttiō, gluttīre. Compare French sangloter. Compare also Portuguese soluçar, Romanian sughița, Spanish sollozar, from *suggluttiāre.
